While he was still in the army, he moved to California and opted to pursue his career in the acting field. At the time of the world war, he was in the army, and after struggling a bit finally, Joe got his first film credit in the movie, City across the river in 1948. Over the years, Joe worked and was credited for a lot of films including the Sand Pebbles, King Rat, and The St. Valentines Day massacre. Joe was a prolific performer with over 100 credited films. He is best known for his role in the direction of Stanley Kubrick, and he was featured in three films of Stanley including The Killing, Paths of Glory, and the shining. His role as a ghostly bartender was appreciated and parodied as well. HE had a role in the original Blade Runner which was released back in 1982 and in that film, his role was of an eccentric replicant creator Eldon Tyrell which was again loved by many people.

Speaking about his TV series, he appeared in a number of episodes of the show called The life and legend of Wyatt Earp. Joe was also featured in films directed by Bert I. Gordon, namely Tormented, The boy and the pirates, and the village of giants. Speaking about some other series in which cast includes, Sky King, tales from the Darkside, The Lone Ranger, SWAT, Adam 12, iron side, The Andy Griffith show, Ben case, The untouchables, Dragnet, Miami Vice, and Bonanza. Before retiring from his work, he did a voice role as well in the blade runner video game spinoff. A source claimed that before death Joe completed a memoir titled The misery for success, which his family is planning to release this year and it is been said that it will be released soon.

Many people are addressing his death and are sending condolences to his family of Joe and prayers as well. Other actors are also mentioning his demise. Speaking about his family, nothing much has been revealed until now, it is been said that he is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law. His brother is also alive and was there with him whose name is David Turel. Although, nothing much about his wife is bene released. The cause of death is also not mentioned as everything was released on short notice.
